Creating a code

A code is a simplified standard in which the experience and practice of the organisation take shape.

The concept in brief

  1. Involving employees in creating the code increases their identification with it.

  2. There are three known types of code: one containing guidelines, one containing actions, and one containing a mix of the two.

  3. A code contains at least 7 and at most 12 points.

  4. The steps in creating it:

    • gathering the rule points, aiming for completeness;
    • grouping, merging and wording the rule points;
    • putting the points of the code in order;
    • visualising the code (as a roll-up banner, in electronic form, etc.)
    • jointly adopting the points of the code and expressing agreement (for example by signing it)
  5. The code must always be transparent and accessible to everyone concerned; otherwise we cannot expect the rule points to be observed.
