What it is about

This short self-assessment tool helps you look at what gives you real drive at work and where you feel something is missing. The Motivation Wheel shows what best supports your satisfaction, commitment and well-being in the organisation. Completing it can be a good starting point for self-reflection, development conversations and a more conscious way of working.

Workplace motivation does not depend only on whether we like our tasks; it is shaped by several interrelated factors.

It is influenced, for example, by our sense of security, our development opportunities, the quality of the feedback we receive, our relationships, and how meaningful we feel our work is.

Someone may be broadly satisfied with their work, yet certain areas may be quietly eroding their enthusiasm.

At other times, a strongly present motivating factor is exactly what helps us through more difficult periods.

That is why it is worth consciously reviewing from time to time what is currently fuelling our motivation and what supports us less.

The Motivation Wheel helps with this by making the main areas of workplace motivation visible in a structured way.

Why measure it? Mapping the motivational factors that matter to employees can help. A decline in enthusiasm, uncertainty or weakening commitment is noticeable. It is important that managers and HR build not on assumptions but on more conscious self-assessment and feedback.

Who is it for?

For employees: new joiners, to make visible what matters to them at work, existing employees, to map their current motivational state, employees showing declining enthusiasm, uncertainty or a risk of burnout, key people whose retention matters to the organisation.

For managers: for their own self-reflection – what motivates them as leaders, to better understand the different motivational patterns in their team, to prepare development conversations and one-to-ones.

For teams: when the goal is shared reflection – what supports or weakens the team’s motivation, in organisational and team development processes, after change, transformation or restructuring.
