Provocation
Provocation is one of the lateral thinking techniques. Its aim is to divert thinking away from patterns and the familiar and to open up new directions, so that creative, new and unusual ideas can come to light.
The concept in brief
Provocation comes from exaggerating, magnifying, diminishing or taking things apart, because a provocative statement helps us break away from the pattern.
The method works effectively if the provocative statement is genuinely far-fetched, unrealistic, even absurd; this is what allows us to step out of our habitual way of thinking.
When using the provocation method, it is important that there is no evaluation, judgement or negative comment, so that creative forces are genuinely released.
