STEEPLE

As an analytical tool, STEEPLE focuses on those factors of the external environment that affect operation, and supports strategy-making.

The concept in brief

  1. STEEPLE is an acronym formed from the initial letters of the English names of the factors.

  2. The factors are: Social, Technical, Economic, Environmental, Political, Legal, Ethical.

  3. The basic aim of the method is to analyse the macro-environment, but when carrying out the analysis it is also worth assessing the impact on the internal environment. After examining each factor, we can consider its consequences for the internal environment and for operation, and, as part of strategy-making, assign the actions needed to soften or strengthen the effect of the factors.

  4. The STEEPLE method can be used effectively together with other methods for environmental analysis and strategy-making, such as SWOT analysis.
