The FOBO model

One possible method of organising processes by content, in which processes are divided into two groups: front office and back office.

The concept in brief

  1. In an organisation, every process is connected to the external client – some directly, others indirectly.

  2. Using the method makes people aware that every job has a front-office and a back-office part.

  3. In the model, front office denotes the processes whose client is directly an external client. A typical front-office process is, for example, preparing an offer, in which we, as supplier, make the client an offer for a service.

  4. Back office denotes the processes whose client is directly an internal client, and the external client only indirectly. A typical back-office process is, for example, an archiving process, which serves order and system but has no direct external client.
